KeepKey vs. TREZOR
For a while, Trezor One was the only Bitcoin hardware wallet available. Today, this monopoly has been challenged by the emergence of other hardware wallets for cryptocurrencies. Some have been described as being better than the Trezor One cold storage hardware wallet because they were built on the Trezor model and have been further improved to have a competitive advantage over the Trezor model.
Fortunately for us, the innovations of new hardware wallets create competition among wallets providers. This competition has resulted in lower prices and better features. Choosing the right wallet, however, has become a challenge for many.
In this article, we compare two of the most popular hardware wallets in the market right now – KeepKey and Trezor. They are compared using the following categories:
- Price
- Design
- Pros and Cons
- Security
- Setup and initialization
- Privacy
- KeepKey Supported Cryptocurrencies
- Does KeepKey support XRP?
- Convert wallet coins
- KeepKey vs. TREZOR
- KeepKey vs. Paper wallet
- Promotion Code KeepKey
- Does KeepKey work with Litecoin?
- KeepKey is actually a TREZOR code port and firmware
- Conclusion
There is no much difference except that TREZOR has been around for a while. The design of both devices is also different. KeepKey feels better, it is made of aluminum and heavier. TREZOR is plastic and easy. TREZOR is very light and can be safer than KeepKey in terms of surviving a fall or other high amount of force.
Price
It costs $129 and can be purchased on Amazon. The high price is due to the digital screen, the metal case and the high level of security.
The KeepKey is compared to the other three common hardware wallets:
Wallet Photo | Wallet Links | Year Released | Price | Screen | Rating |

Ledger Nano S Shop | 2016 | €79 | Yes | 4.5/5 |

Trezor One Shop | 2013 | $99 | Yes | 4.8/5 |

Keepkey Review | 2015 | $129 | Yes | 4.25/5 |
Make sure you never buy a KeepKey wallet or other wallet on eBay. Therefore, Buy KeepKey only on Officially Authorized KeepKey shopping websites by KeepKey or Amazon.
Design
This comparative photo shows the KeepKey next to the Ledger Nano S and Trezor One blockchain wallets. As is evident, the KeepKey is the largest of the three, and the Ledger Nano S is the middle sized one when opened.
It can be said that the appearance of a hardware material does not matter. The only thing that matters is security. Regarding the size of the device trezor is lower than the KeepKey. However, the display screen of the KeepKey device is larger than that of the trezor. This has the advantage that the backup process using an encryption system can be performed, resulting in less data loss.
PROS
-
- The most feature-rich Bitcoin hardware wallet
- Digital screen and metal case
CONS
-
- The price of $ 129 may be out of reach for some buyers
- New wallet, must gain more confidence
Security
The goal of a hardware wallet is to store private keys in a secure offline environment. KeepKey provides first-class security and protection against physical and virtual theft. It can be used on any computer, even with computers infected with malicious or hacked software. In other words, it is a small standalone computer, specially designed for storing Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin and other cryptocurrency private keys. In addition to the offline store, the PIN code and randomization numbers make sure that:
1) your wallet is protected against physical theft, and
2) that a hacker can not steal bitcoins containing malicious software in your wallet.
KeepKey is a high definition wallet. This means that your entire wallet can be secured with the 12 words generated. The default is 12 words, although KeepKey supports seed length of 18 and 24. The seed is generated with entropy from the inside of the device and the equipment used for the device. Therefore, the seed is generated offline in the KeepKey and displayed on the device screen.
The offline screen of the device ensures that the seed will not be displayed on a device connected to the Internet. Also, You can restore your wallet with seed saved if the device is lost, stolen or damaged.
The recovery can be done with the KK Chrome extension. Make sure to keep several backup copies of your seed and use other proven methods. On the screen, the wallet helps verify that it is sent to the correct recipient, not to phishing attacks or the like.
Setup and initialization
The KeepKey is very easy to configure. It only takes a few minutes. The configuration of both devices is relatively simple, the configuration process is essentially the same and only takes a few minutes. All you have to do is create a PIN code and write down your recovery seed.
It’s important to back up your seed recovery in a safe place if you forget it. Most hardware wallets come with recovery cards that you can use to safely write your backup seed.
The KeepKey blockchain wallet is very easy to setup. It takes just a few minutes. See here how it’s done:
Privacy
As with any hardware wallets, using your device is as private as the software wallet with which it is used. Electrum, KeepKey Chrome and MultiBit HD are compatible with KeepKey. As it is, Electrum is the most private of the three.
KeepKey Supported Coins
According to its website, KeepKey is only compatible with Bitcoin, Litecoin, Dogecoin, Namecoin, Testnet, Ethereum and Dash technologies. This means that KeepKey stores mainly the most popular coins.
Does KeepKey Support XRP?
KeepKey can not save XRP yet. Many KeepKey users ask in reddit for XRP support on their KeepKey wallets. Therefore, it’s likely to be one of the next coins the company will add.
Converting Coins within the Wallet
ShapeShift acquired KeepKey. Since then, a new feature has been added that lets you swap tokens directly into your KeepKey. This means that you can trade without having to create an account on an exchange.
KeepKey vs Paper Wallet
KeepKey may be better for less technical users than a paper wallet. Paper folders can be difficult to install and mistakes can be made easily. With KK, it’s easier to create a secure offline store. Paper wallets, however, are just as safe if created correctly.
KeepKey Promo Code
There are currently no promotion codes available on KeepKey. If a coupon or discount code is available, we will update this release.
Does KeepKey work with Litecoin?
KeepKey can be used to store Litecoin, DASH and other Altcoins. So it’s up to the wallet software developers to integrate support. The device itself is compatible with any Altcoin.
CONCLUSION
The Trezor One wallet satisfied our tests. Trezor One is cheaper and available for $99 which is lesser than the KeepKey hardware wallet.
However, you must also consider other aspects. And consider those aspects, we did. KeepKey has a single key that facilitates the transaction, unlike Trezor, which has two different keys. This makes for fewer parts to possibly break. As such, we gave KeepKey the win on that factor.
In addition, if you want to move a lot of crypto and carry something portable, you can reliably use the Trezor One hardware wallet. And, it is also perfect for those who love sustainability.
KeepKey is however an excellent choice for lovers of “style”. It has a larger screen and its design is much more elegant than the Trezor wallets. Of course, it is also a very reliable hardware wallet. However, it stores a relatively small number of the cryptocurrencies that you may wish to store. Of course, both wallets are much safer than traditional wallet exchanges. So to increase your crypto portfolio’s security, you should seriously consider getting a blockchain hardware wallet for yourself.
